6.5 Mile Circular Walk - Oldfield | Oakworth Moor | Wolf Stones

Distance: 6.5 miles

Ascent: 770 ft

Walking: Andrew

Weather: Overcast.

OS Map: OL21 - South Pennines

Starting point: Oldfield Lane, Oakworth.

Photography: Andrew using Nikon D750 / Nikon 70-200 mm f2.8 and Nikon 24-70 f2.8 mm

This old spring is situated in the wall outside Oldfield School.

A typical walled path of this area. This one runs alongside Oldfield School and climbs up Hare Hill Edge to the long abandoned quarry, Blue Stone Delph.

Roms Greave Hill, Oakworth Moor.

Grouse shooting butts on Oakworth Moor. There doesn't seem to have been any shooting this year (it starts on the 'Glorious 12th' August). Presumably, the wet spring meant the birds interrupted the breeding process.

An old boundary stone at Scotland Hill.

Sphagnum moss acts like a sponge, retaining water and slowing down the natural decaying process to form peat. The slower release of water into the moorland streams helps to prevent flooding downstream.

Soft rush. The stems were traditionally soaked in fat and used as wicks in lamps as a cheaper alternative to candles

Walkers on The Pennine Way at Old Bess Hill.

Old Bess (the one lying on the left) was part of a line of standing stones on the ancient boundary between Yorkshire and Lancashire. The smaller one with the letters CG (or possibly CC) carved on it is later. For more information click HERE

Yep. Another abandoned quarry, this time at Crag Top.
