3.5 Mile Wander Around Oakworth

Distance: 3.5 miles

Walking: Andrew

Weather: Misty to start, then sunny

Just an aimless wander around Oakworth, really.

Back in Holden Park

One of the many entrances to the network of man-made caves in Holden Park

As mentioned in previous in previous posts, these grottoes were commissioned in the late 1800s by local mill owner / inventor / politician Sir Isaac Holden and stood at the back of his mansion, Oakworth House. They were originally housed in a huge glass house and featured mosaic floors, electric light, tropical plants and waterfalls.

Looks like some moron has chucked an egg at Sir Isaac's bust

Dockroyd Graveyard, final resting place of many of the great and good of Victorian and Edwardian Oakworth.

The Sugden family vault is the largest memorial in the graveyard. The Sugdens were wealthy mill owners who ran, among others, Lower Providence Mill and Vale Mill. Robert Newsholme Sugden had our house built (as part of a stable block) in 1878 and he is commemorated on the memorial.

The heart of any Yorkshire village, the fish & chip shop.

Providence Lane. The chimney is all that remains of Lower Providence Mill, which was demolished in 1984

Lower Laithe Farm. I had my shorts on and the path from here to Mytholmes was very overgrown so I turned back.

Looking back down Station Road. I was asked not to take any photos at the station by the crew filming The Railway Children Return. They've been here for about 5 weeks and this is the last week of filming.
